The Importance of Staying Hydrated While Working
Water is something that all living organisms need to survive. Unfortunately, many people fall short of drinking an adequate amount of water. If you push through the workdays while drinking little or no water, it could result in some potentially serious problems. Body Temperature Regulation
If you work in a laborious job, such as construction or manufacturing, your body temperature will likely increase while you work. Performing any type of physical activity, in fact, will raise your body temperature. Water, however, helps to regulate your body temperature through perspiration. By staying hydrated, your body will naturally cool itself by sweating. Sweating releases heat from your body so that you don't overheat. For this biological process to happen, you must stay hydrated.
Productivity Levels
Staying hydrated can also improve your productivity levels while working. One study found that dehydrated workers are over 25% less productive, on average, than their hydrated counterparts. How does hydration affect productivity exactly? If you are dehydrated, you may experience symptoms like fatigue and low energy levels. As these symptoms set in, they may cause you to work slower and less efficiently. By staying hydrated, though, you can increase your productivity levels.
Injury Risk
You might be surprised to learn staying hydrated can lower your risk of injury while working. Work-related injuries are often attributed to muscle cramps. If a muscle cramps up, moving or otherwise engaging it could tear some of the tissue. Muscle tears such as this can be extremely painful, but a simple way to lower your risk of developing them is to drink plenty of water. Water lubricates your joints and tissues so that they are less prone to cramps.
Motivation
Another reason why it's important to stay hydrated while working is because it increases motivation. Dehydration does more than just cause physical symptoms; it causes mental symptoms like decreased energy levels and fatigue. Of course, it's difficult to stay motivated if you feel tired all the time. Therefore, drinking plenty of water throughout the workday will help you stay motivated.
From regulating your body temperature to promoting increased productivity levels and more, staying hydrated is important while working. If you don't drink a sufficient amount of water, you may experience symptoms of dehydration that hinder your health as well as your ability to safely and efficiently perform your job.
