Exercise is something that everyone needs, yet most people don't get enough of it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in fact, says 77% of Americans fail to get a sufficient amount of exercise. Being that millions of Americans fall short of the CDC's exercise guidelines, you may assume that lack of exercise isn't a big deal. The hard truth, however, is that regular exercise is critically important to your health for the following reasons.
Weight Management
Regular exercise will allow you to manage your weight more easily. You can't expect to maintain a healthy body weight if you rarely -- or never -- exercise. Whether it's running, jogging, swimming or lifting weights, exercise burns calories to keep your body weight in check. Along with a healthy diet, it will help you maintain a healthy weight.
Improved Sleep
You'll probably experience better, more restful sleep if you exercise regularly. Exercise, of course, requires energy. When you're finished exercising for the day, you'll probably feel tired. As a result, you should fall asleep and stay asleep more easily. Considering that over one-quarter of the U.S. adult population suffers from a sleep disorder, this alone should be reason enough to exercise more regularly.
Healthier Heart
Regular exercise also promotes a healthier heart. When you exercise, your heart will beat faster to circulate blood through your body. The increased heart rate associated with exercise helps to strengthen your heart muscle. The CDC says that heart disease is the single most common cause of death in the United States. In a typical year, over 600,000 Americans will lose their life due to heart disease. You can keep your heart healthy, however, with regular exercise.
Lower Risk of Chronic Diseases
By exercising regularly, you can lower your risk of chronic diseases. Numerous studies have shown that people who regularly exercise are less likely to suffer from diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even cancer than people who don't exercise regularly. Regular exercise isn't a foolproof way to protect against chronic diseases. Nonetheless, it can help lower your risk of developing chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Improves Mood
You might be surprised to learn that regular exercise can improve your mood. Any form of physical activity will trigger the release of endorphins, as well as other mood-altering chemicals, in your body. As these chemicals are released, you'll feel happier and less stressed.
