OSHA Investigates Death of Gun Range Instructor

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has opened an investigation into the shooting death of an Arizona-based gun range instructor.

The incident occurred last month, when a 9-year-old girl accidentally shot the instructor at near-point-blank range with an Uzi. The instructor, 39-year-old Charles Vacca, died that same night while receiving emergency medical treatment at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas. The Clark County, Nevada Coroner Mike Murphy issued a time of death of 8:56 PM.

It's not uncommon for children to practice shooting firearms at the gun range, but this particular incident is drawing criticism for the gun used. The girl, who's name is behind withheld due to her age, was granted access to a 9mm sub-automatic Uzi. Some Uzis are capable of firing over 1,700 rounds per minute. It's unclear whether or not this particular model was used in this deadly incident, but the fact remains that these are incredibly powerful and equally dangerous firearms, especially when placed in the hands of an inexperienced child.

The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health reported last week that it is currently investigating the shooting death of gun instructor Charles Vacca. In an interview with NBC News, a spokesperson for OHSA confirmed that there's no specific rules or standards that apply to this case. However, the shooting range, which is called Burgers and Bullets, must meet the general criteria for operating a shooting range, including "firing range industry standards and practices, both within the state of Arizona and nationally.". If OSHA investigators discover any violations, Burgers and Bullets could be subject to a fine and/or other forms of penalties.

This deadly incident was sparked a wave of controversy over gun ranges and whether or not children should be allowed to participate in them. Some people believe it's an acceptable and even beneficial practice, while others believe it's a life-threatening danger that's not worth the risk.

Following the incident, the Sheriff's Office released a statement saying that the investigation was complete and that no charges are pending at this time.

"The Sheriff's Office investigation is completed. Based on the video (of the shooting), the Sheriff's Office has determined no charges are pending. The sheriff is not available for comment. No interviews will be given."
