Indoor Mold Prevention: 5 Steps to Preventing Mold in the Workplace

Is your workplace susceptible to mold? Mold doesn't just grow outdoors; it can grow indoors as well. In addition to homes and other residences, mold often grows in factories, warehouses and other workplaces. If left unchecked, the presence of this multicellular fungi can increase the risk of allergies and respiratory distress. The good news is that you can prevent mold from growing in your workplace by following these five steps.

#1) Let in the Sunlight

Assuming your workplace has windows, letting in the sunlight can prevent mold growth. Sunlight consists of ultraviolet (UV) rays that kills most types of mold on contact. This is why mold typically grows in dark and damp spaces -- because it can't survive sunlight. By opening the curtains, sunlight can beam into your workplace through the windows to discourage mold growth.

#2) Look for Leaks

It's a good idea to look for leaks in your workplace. Leaking water is a contributing factor in many cases of indoor mold growth. Maybe there's a faucet that's leaking, or perhaps the air conditioner is leaking. Regardless, leaks such as this will create a moist environment inside of your workplace while subsequently increasing the risk of mold growth. By fixing leaks, on the other hand, you'll promote a drier workplace that's less susceptible to mold growth.

#3) Vent Moisture Outside

Don't forget to vent moisture outside of your workplace. Many workplaces have machines or appliances that produce moisture. Like clothing dryers, they create moist air. These machines and appliances, however, need to be properly vented. They should vent the moisture outside of your workplace rather than inside it. When vented inside, moisture will remain trapped inside of your workplace.

#4) Control the Humidity

One of the most effective ways to prevent mold growth in your workplace is to control the humidity. High humidity is the precursor for mold growth. Most types of mold require a humidity level of at least 60% to grow. By controlling the humidity in your workplace so that it's lower than 60%, mold shouldn't be a concern.

#5) Run the Air Conditioner

You might be surprised to learn that running the air conditioner can prevent mold from growing in your workplace. Air conditioners ventilate cool air to create a more comfortable workplace during the hot summer months. Additionally, though, they remove moisture from the air. Running the air conditioner will dehumidify your workplace so that it's better protected from mold growth.
