How to Save Money on Air Conditioning Costs This Summer
Nothing beats the feeling of walking into an air-conditioned home on a hot summer day. Even if it's scorching-hot outside, spending just a few minutes indoors will quickly cool you off. The downside to using air conditioning, though, is that it consumes electricity. The more you use your air conditioning, the more money you'll have to pay in utility expenses. The good news is that you can save money on air conditioning costs this summer by following these simple tips.
Program the Thermostat
Assuming your home is equipped with a programmable thermostat -- which most homes are -- programming it can save you money on air conditioning costs. A programmable thermostat allows you to specify when you want the air conditioner to run. If your home is typically unoccupied during the morning hours, for instance, you can disable the air conditioner during this time. Instead, program the thermostat so that the air conditioner turns on when your home is occupied, such as the daytime and evening hours.
Use Ceiling Fans
Another way save money on air conditioning costs this summer is to use ceiling fans. Ceiling fans won't necessarily lower the temperature inside your home, nor will they produce cool air. They will, however, help to circulate the air to create the perception of a cooler environment. By using the ceiling fans, you won't have to rely as much as on your home's air conditioner to stay cool this summer.
Change the Air Filter
When was the last time that you changed your home's air filter? If it's been three months or longer, you should consider changing it. All homes with a conventional split-system air conditioner system have an air filter. It's a component made of a mesh material that's designed to filter the air. If you don't change it, the air filter will become clogged with excess debris to the point where air can no longer travel through the ducts.
Keep Doors and Windows Closed
Avoid leaving doors or windows open for any extended period during the summer. If a door or window is open, the cool air inside your home will escape. At the same time, the cool air will be replaced by warm outdoor air. This one-two punch can lead to higher air conditioning costs. Therefore, you should keep all the doors and windows closed, especially when it's hot outside.
