How to Maintain a Cordless Power Drill

Installing and removing screws is a breeze with a cordless power drill. You won't have to manually turn the bit. As you may know, cordless power drills will turn the bit automatically. You can use them to easily install and remove screws in workpieces. To make your cordless power drill last, though, there are certain maintenance tips you should follow.

Keep It Clean

You should try to keep your cordless power drill clean. Like all power tools, it will inevitably attract dirt. As dirt and dust build up inside of the chuck, it can degrade your cordless power drill. The chuck will no longer turn smoothly during use. Instead, the dirt and dust particles will create friction that grind away at the inner walls of the chuck. 

Oil Regularly

Another maintenance tip is to oil your cordless power drill. Cordless power drills don't have combustion engines, so they don't contain motor oil. Nonetheless, many of them use oil for lubrication. Applying oil in and around your cordless power drill will lubricate it.

Don't Overheat

Cordless power drills are prone to overheating. All cordless power drills will produce heat during use. As the chuck turns, it will generate heat. While cordless power drills can withstand some heat, too much heat may damage them. To protect your cordless power drill from damage, you should avoid overheating it. If you feel it getting hot, stop drilling so that it can cool down.

Replace Worn Bits

When was the last time that you inspected your bits? Cordless power drills use bits. Different bits are designed for different types of screw heads. A Philips head bit, for instance, will allow you to install and remove Philips head screws. Regardless of the type of bit, though, it won't last forever. Bits will eventually become worn down to the point where you'll need to replace them.

Store Properly

The environment in which you store your cordless power drill will affect its lifespan. Storing it in a humid environment may result in premature damage. Moisture and power tools don't mix. When exposed to moisture, your cordless power drill may succumb to performant damage.

Inspect Ventilation Slots

Don't forget to inspect the ventilation slots on your cordless power drill. Ventilation slots are designed to allow air to flow into and out of your cordless power drill. If they are obstructed, damage may occur.
