Want to boost your immune system? The immune system plays an important role in protecting against infectious illnesses. Consisting of organs, cells and proteins, it's responsible for fighting foreign invaders. When germs enter your body, your immune system will attempt to neutralize them. The stronger your immune system, the greater the protection it offer against infectious illnesses. Here are some healthy habits for a strong immune system.
Manage Your Weight
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that excess weight can affect bodily functions, including the immune system. People who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher are more likely to suffer from a suppressed immune system than their counterparts with a lower BMI. By managing your weight, you'll benefit from a stronger immune system and a lower risk of infection.
Stay Hydrated
Don't underestimate the importance of hydration. Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining a strong immune system. Water helps to flush waste and toxins from the body while simultaneously keeping the mucous membranes moist. For a strong immune system, try to drink at least eight to 10 cups of water per day. If you are physically active or live in a hot or dry climate, you may want to drink even more water per day.
Stay Physically Activate
Staying physically active is essential to achieving a strong immune system. Regular exercise has been shown to promote a strong immune system by reducing inflammation, promoting circulation and improving overall health. You can boost your immune system by performing at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per day. Examples of moderate-intensity exercise include brisk walking, cycling or swimming.
Lower Your Stress Levels
Are you chronically stressed? There's a correlation between stress levels and immune system health. People who have lower stress levels typically have a healthier and stronger immune system than their counterparts with high stress levels. Chronic stress stress can weaken your immune system and increase your risk of infections.
Prioritize Sleep
Sleep, or lack thereof, can affect your immune system. Sleep plays a vital role in immune function. Studies have shown that chronic sleep deprivation can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of infection. For a strong immune system, try to get seven to eight hours of sleep per night. You can also establish a sleep routine to promote healthy sleep habits that boost your immune system.
