The next time you go shopping for groceries, be sure to pick up some fish. The American Heart Association (AHA) says adults should consume at least two servings of fish per week. Aside from its delicious flavor, though, fish offers some key health benefits that shouldn't be ignored.

Lowers Risk of Heart Disease

Being that it's recommended by the AHA, it shouldn't come as a surprise to learn that eating fish on a regular basis can lower your risk of heart disease. Statistics show that more than 600,000 American die each year from heart disease. Fish can lower your risk, however, by supplementing your body with key nutrients like unsaturated fatty acids. Known as "good" fats, these fatty acids lower levels of bad cholesterol and raise levels of good cholesterol.

Lowers Blood Pressure

Because of its positive effects of cholesterol levels, fish can also keep your blood pressure levels in check. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly one in three Americans suffer from high blood pressure. And when there's too much force, or pressure, placed upon the blood vessels, it restricts the flow of blood while simultaneously increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Promotes Healthy Cognitive Function

As explained by the Washington State Department of Health, the omega-3s found in fish promote healthy brain activity. Our bodies are unable to produce omega-3s on their own. Therefore, we must consume them through outside sources, such as fish. You can promote healthy cognitive function and keep your brain sharp by making fish a regular part of your diet.

Statistics show that more than 41% of the U.S. population suffers from a vitamin D deficiency. While you can get vitamin D from the sun, another source if fish. A single serving of fish contains roughly 100% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin D.

These are just a few of the many health benefits of eating fish. It's important to choose the right type of fish, however. Generally speaking, it's best to avoid farm-raised fish and, instead, choose the wild-caught variety. Wild-caught fish often have higher levels of nutrients and vitamins, making them well worth the nominal price difference. Whether you prefer salmon, flounder, whiting, tilapia, etc., make fish a part of your regular diet. As revealed here, it will pay off in the form of better health.
