6 Tips to Control High Blood Pressure
It's estimated that roughly one-third of all Americans suffer from high blood pressure. Also known as hypertension, it's a chronic medical condition that, when left unchecked, can lead to heart disease, stroke and other serious diseases. If you suffer from high blood pressure, though, there are several steps you can take to get it under control.
#1) Reduce Sodium Intake
Consuming less sodium in your diet may have a positive impact on your blood pressure. High-sodium diets increase the risk of high blood pressure by restricting your kidneys' ability to remove water from your body. You can still consume sodium in your diet; you just need to consume it moderation. Otherwise, it could cause your blood pressure to rise.
#2) Manage Your Weight
Weight management plays an important role in controlling high blood pressure. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 40% of U.S. adults are now overweight. Being overweight can take a toll on your health in countless ways, one of which is by raising your blood pressure. By managing your weight, you'll have an easier time controlling your blood pressure.
#3) Reduce Caffeine Intake
In addition to sodium, excessive caffeine intake is a major risk factor for high blood pressure. Caffeine is a stimulant, and like all stimulants, it makes your body work faster. If you consume an excessive amount of caffeine -- whether it's from foods or beverages -- it may contribute to high blood pressure.
#4) Exercise
You can't expect to control your high blood pressure unless you exercise regularly. Lack of exercise increases pressure in your arteries, resulting in elevated blood pressure levels.
#5) Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleep doesn't just restore your energy levels; it offers an opportunity for your body to reset. If you don't get enough sleep, not only will feel you feel tired the following day, but you may experience high blood pressure. The bottom line is that you need to get adequate sleep -- usually around seven or eight hours per night -- to control high blood pressure.
#6) Get Your Omega-3s
Finally, getting more omega-3s in your diet can have a positive impact on your blood pressure. Omega-3s are fats that, unlike other fats, promote a healthy heart. They reduce buildup in the arteries, which in turn lowers your blood pressure.
