5 Safety Tips to Follow When Using Alligator Shears

Alligator shears may it easy to cut through sheet metal. Also known as lever shears, they feature a lever-like blade. You can cut pieces of sheet metal by placing them through the jaws of alligator shears. When engaged, the blade will slide through the sheet metal. While alligator shears are easy to use, however, they require proper safety precautions to protect against injury.

#1) Inspect the Guard

Before using alligator shears, take a minute to inspect the guard. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires alligator shears to feature a guard. The guard is located around the blade. It's designed to block projectiles of metal waste. When cutting sheet metal, small pieces of debris may shoot out from the blade. Like with all cutting tools, you should keep your hands away from the blade when using alligator shears. Alligator shears have an ultra-sharp blade. After all, they are used to cut through sheet metal. Most alligator shears are capable of cutting through both aluminum and steel. To protect against injury, keep your hands away from the blade at all times when using alligator shears.

#3) Wear Impact-Resistant Safety Glasses

Don't forget to wear impact-resistant safety glasses when using alligator shears. Cutting sheet metal with alligator shears can create projectiles. While alligator shears are required to have a guard, some of these projectiles may make their way past this barrier and into your eyes. Impact-resistant safety glasses will protect you from eye injuries due to projectiles. As their name suggests, impact-resistant safety glasses are designed to withstand impact without breaking.

#4) Identify the Emergency Stop Button

Most alligator shears have an emergency stop button. When pressed, it will automatically disable the cutting blade. You should identify this emergency stop button before using alligator shears. Make sure you know where it's located in case of emergency. If the alligator shears malfunction, you can press the emergency stop button to disable the cutting blade.

#5) Follow Maintenance Requirements

All alligator shears have maintenance requirements. Depending on the particular type, you may need to change the oil and apply lubricant. You'll probably need to replace the blade on occasion as well. Make sure you stay on top of these maintenance requirements. Neglecting to maintain alligator shears can result in damage or bodily injury.
